Getting Started with Oxygen

The Marjorie Collins Centre in Chadwell Heath started life as a Community and Outreach Centre for the local community and it has been onward and upward since

There was a slight downturn last year resulting in the Centre not being available to the community for a short time then, with the intervention by our chair, Richard, and he playing hard-ball he was able for MS Action to take over the lease and the Marjorie Collins Centre reopened back in May 2024.

The next step was rebranding and appraising what therapies could be available for our members, associates and other users with the Centre ‘officially’ being back on the map on the 1st of December 2024.

By March the Oxygen Barochamber was installed and the first users were availing themselves of the barochamber and life-giving oxygen.

Now we all realise that oxygen is essential to life. Not only does it allow us to live but in addition, it helps us all to heal from injuries.

Let’s take it one stage further because the oxygen therapy we provide is oxygen supplied through a mask in a pressurized chamber.

Everything changes with the word hyperbaric and when combined with oxygen appears to suggest to some doctors that the oxygen used is somehow different.

Other forms of oxygen are known, (singlet oxygen O2 and ozone O3) but the oxygen provided under pressurised conditions, as in our barochamber, is the same oxygen as in the air we all breathe every day, except…..

It is pressure inside the barochamber that makes the massive difference and it is that pressure that determines the oxygen concentration breathed in when using the barochamber.

Unfortunately, medical schools appear to continue not teaching students the importance of atmospheric pressure in oxygen delivery. Even at sea level, barometric pressure can vary more than 10%, which means that the concentration Pure oxygen is classified in some countries as a ‘Prescription-only- Medicine’ which implies a fear of so-called toxicity, but the lack of oxygen is far more devastating. It is not possible to increase oxygen intake by breathing faster. However, by increasing atmospheric pressure in an enclosure known as a Barochamber, oxygen absorption by body tissue increases.

And we have one of these Barochambers at our centre and because it doesn’t pressurise above 2 atmospheres (known as 2ATA or an equivalent pressure of diving to 33 feet under sea level, you will often hear an oxygen session called a ‘Dive’), provided you meet our criteria and you are happy to follow our protocols, you can join us and take oxygen sessions.

Finally, every session is overseen by 2 trained operators, always in contact with the users, and always willing to assist and advise.

Pamper yourselves ……

Majorie Collins now has a new Beauty Therapist, Maria, who comes in on Thursday from 10am.

Maria offers a range of beauty therapies including manicures, pedicures, facials, waxing and tinting.

She also offers several massages as well as reflexology.

There are even a few extras for men who want to look their best in their swimming trunks, including back and chest waxing.

So why not treat yourself to a pamper and come out looking even lovelier as well?

‍It’s not essential you look like this after treatment but inside you know you’ll feel good!‍

On the left you can see that part of the car park has had to be cordoned off to allow for the digging of a trench.

The trench will then have the new cable laid in it.

Filling the trench in will happen almost immediately but it will then need surfacing to walk and drive over allowing access to and from the parking-spaces.

‍Please, excuse the inconvenience but …..

Some works have to continue to upgrade your centre.

And this time it is the improve the electrical supply system to the entire building and grounds.

When the centre was built, I’m sure the original conception did not have an inkling of the changes that would occur and be needed over the following years.

For instance; a few years ago, a sizable extension to the rear of the original building was added because it was needed.

Now, following the installation and setting up of a new, to the centre, therapy “Oxygen- Therapy” facility, it was decided that it was time for the another major upgrade while these works were being carried out, the upgrade to the electricity supply.

Electricity; and the system that we had was in need of a major overhaul and an increase in capacity too. Not sometime, not later, NOW and soon.

PowerGen finally arranged for the upgrade and soon we will have a system that will supply our needs for electricity for some time to come.

Unfortunately, the upgrade comes with a tad of inconvenience, which will be kept to the bare minimum, in that the right-hand side of the car park will be off bounds to parking for a short while.

Sorry and excuse the inconvenience but this work has to be carried out for the longevity of the services we provide going forward into the future.
